March 3: Glasvegas @ The Bardot

I ended up going to a few great shows last month (a couple were free and totally unplanned). And before I go to my only planned shows for this month (The Dandy Warhols and Desert Daze), I felt I should post some of my photos, videos, and some comments about the shows. First, Glasvegas did a last minute show at the Bardot (before their sold out one at the Echo) on March 3rd. Several great bands also played with them: The Darcys, Howler, and Gangs of Youth.

I’d seen Glasvegas once before at Hollywood Forever, but this was actually my first proper show since that one was sort of an acoustic show (great in itself, though very different from a normal one). It was an impressive performance in a tiny venue (the Bardot is a small bunch of rooms above the Avalon). Also, Howler were great (in a very energetic punk pop way – sorry, that’s the best description I have) and their jumpsuits would make the Ghostbusters jealous. My photos turned out pretty well, despite the redness of the lighting. Here’s a link to the Flickr set, as well as a slideshow:

Also, here are my videos for “Geraldine” and “Secret Truth”:

This post ended up a lot longer than I expected, so I will end with my comments about the shows by Band of Skulls and Dean & Britta. Band of Skulls are great, well written songs and lots of energy – however, I hated the Belasco (more the area than the theater itself, and being too expensive) and I’d like to avoid ever having to pay $6 for a bottle of water by never going there again. Some of my Band of Skulls photos were pretty good, but half of them are just other people taking photos.

Dean & Britta were awesome, with a recording history that includes Galaxie 500 and Luna – they have lots of great songs to choose from. Dean Wareham will be at Amoeba in Hollywood April 24 at 6PM if you need proof.  The opener for that secret show was Gulp, a band by Super Furry Animals member Guto Pryce and his wife singing – they sound very SFA, though I was a little late and only caught a few songs.
