On Saturday night, Ringo Deathstarr – my favorite crazy shoegaze kids from Austin, played a show at the Slidebar in Fullerton. They sounded fine to me, though they’d sound better in a larger room with better acoustics. Apparently, I only see them in crappy venues with bad sound. This was exactly two years from my first time seeing them at the Church on York (RIP, already closed down). The ventilation – or lack of ventilation – of that place didn’t make it a good concert venue.
I’d also seen them at Desert Stars Festival later that year and missed them play another show at the Slidebar the next night. A friend who went to both shows said there was hardly anyone last time they played the Slidebar. It was good to see a slightly full room there that night. Though it was kind of full, I managed to sneak up a few times for some photos. Those photos ended up better than most of my far away shots.
Based on the very red lighting, I decided taking video would be better than photos. Also, I have digital versions of all their albums/EPs which makes identifying tracks easier. I personally think they sounded great despite the room. I’m only comparing them to the band that went on before them (who I probably badmouthed in front of their drummer – whoops).
I ended up taking 4 videos of 5 songs (plus a snippet on my phone), and those are all on YouTube and Instagram:
