What to Wear to Your First Ever Business Conference

If you are soon to attend your first ever business conference, you will be eager to make an excellent first impression. Making a great first impression is essential whether you are trying to attract customers, clients or even investors, and the way that you dress is often what forms the first opinion which people have of you. Selecting which clothes to wear for your first business conference may not have seemed important to you up to now, but in actual fact the future of your business could be riding on the wardrobe choices that you make. We’ve put together a list of tips for selecting the perfect business conference outfit.

Be Smart

Dressing smart is essential when it comes to attending a business conference. You will want to look both professional and confident in your industry, something which dressing smart can easily convey from a single glance. For men, a smart suit is essential, along with a tie and smart shoes. Ladies have a little more choice when it comes to dressing smartly, but again a trouser or skirt suit or a formal office dress is usually the best choice. However, it’s important not to overdo it, as you don’t want to look like you are trying too hard. The best option is to dress as you would for a day in work if the most senior manager was going to pay a visit.

Standing Out

In a sea of black, grey, and navy blue suits, you’re going to want to select an item of clothing which makes you stand out. Accessories are excellent for when it comes to standing out from the crowd, and the best thing is that they work in such a way that you are able to stand out in a subtle yet effective way, rather than sticking out like a sore thumb. For example, men could wear a tie in a bright colour such as red, or even a tie with an unusual pattern which will definitely be noticed. Ladies might want to consider wearing a brightly coloured neck scarf, belt, or even an unusual necklace or hair accessory to ensure that they stand out from the crowd without being too in-your-face.

Comfort

Another factor which should be taken into consideration when choosing an outfit for a business conference is comfort. Although you’ll want to dress smartly and make a fantastic first impression on potential business partners, investors and clients, you need to remember that you’re likely to be on your feet all day and you’ll be wearing the items of clothing that you choose for hours at a time. Shoes are one item that should be chosen for comfort. If you are female, wearing sky high heels might make you look that little bit smarter, but think about the effect that this will have on your feet by the end of the day. Smart flats or small heels are a better choice, or take some along to change into.
