I’m playing catch up on show reviews (since I’ve been on a lucky streak with winning tickets). The Black Ryder played a couple shows in Southern California, the first on February 23rd at the Continental Room in Fullerton and this one at the Echo on the 25th. I attended both (thanks to Kristy who couldn’t go for giving me her ticket), though the Monday night show started and ended really late (plus 2 too many openers). The show itself was good despite the very late start. I heard the stage was probably too small for all their gear, but they managed to play a full and excellent sounding set.
The Black Ryder’s second album “The Door Behind the Door” (officially released on February 24) is more mellow sounding than the first album “Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride,” and possibly more moody (or dirge-like), it sounds a little like Spiritualized to me. The Echo show was full of familiar faces (including some well known ones) and some unusual characters (a matador and a Hunter S. Thompson look alike), which made going to the show alone less scary (and a lot more interesting).
I tried to take more photos at this show since the lighting and the crowd made it very difficult to get anything decent.
I posted some of my best shots on Flickr, and most of the rest are here:
If you haven’t heard or seen the Black Ryder, you should check out this video for “Seventh Moon.”
