Moon Block Party was a fun experience for me, the Pomona Fairplex allowed the three stages to be far away from each other (and the entrance) with no sound overlap and there were lots of vendors and food stands in between them. Most of our time was spent in front of the Main Stage, where we arrived a little before Band of Skulls hit the stage. I’d seen them at one other show before and seeing them outdoors in the daytime was kind of cool. With the amount of radio play they’ve gotten, I was a little surprised to see them go on so early though I don’t go to as many festivals as I used to – so what do I know? I do like seeing Band of Skulls live, they have a lot of great songs that make you want to groove!
The Black Lips were next – the coveted sun setting time slot… not really, but there was a clear transition from light to dark during their set. They put on a lively set, a little garage-y and a little punk-y. Some of the Band of Skulls were enjoying their set right in front of us.
Seeing the Black Angels is always a cool experience, their light show is especially impressive and I got a little trigger happy with my photos this time around. They’ve definitely got the best visual projections going for them and sounded great doing it.
Last, but not least was Spoon, who have played huge festivals like Coachella – so this smaller festival crowd felt somewhat intimate in comparison. There was some crazy stuff going on during their set that was a little distracting, but Spoon were good despite all the distractions for those of us who didn’t need to watch amateur porn or crazy dancing to enjoy the music.
